How Coach Ilias Zouros will effect Anadolu Efes? (english version)

Undoubtedly the sign of coach Zouros is  the biggest example that Anadolu’s administration wants to work in the right direction from know on. Maybe a little bit late, now that Euroleague dream doesn’t exist anymore, but everyone knows how important is the Turkish championship now, one of the most quality leagues over Europe. How the coach of the Greek NT can change Efes with his philosophy? Let’s take a closer look to his beliefs always in determined with Anadolu’s currently situation. A mini guide for the Turkish team’s fans..

Zouros is a rigorous and meticulous character. He will stand by the players but never become their friend. During his coaching career he received many influences which it has used and adding to his philosophy. Zouros changed with the past of time, becoming a better leader bringing together all elements of a modern coach, worthy representative of the Greek school. We referred the term  ”Greek school”. That includes values like defense, reading of the opponent’s weaknesses and too much physical attitude and tactic. That is Greek basketball all about. That is what Anadolu needs right now.

Efes’s biggest problem through season is that it hasn’t clear plan and orientation in what they play on the court. Zouros has straight ideas about what he wants from his team. Of course he’s a defensive minded coach. His teams like to press on the ball either on 4/4  or half court defenses. Expect players like Sinan Guler, Dogus Balbay and Tarence Kinsey to spend more minutes on the court due to their ability to defend and press the ball. Zouros likes hard-nosed role players and blue-collar guys who can really use their mind and win with this asset.

His service on French league influenced him a lot, especially on his offensive philosophy. After his return from France, Zouros sought a faster offensive tempo, choosing transition offense as his favorite. A transition offense based on  principles. Take Panellinios as an example. During his 3 year staying in the club, they choose  an unprecenteded fast tempo for the ”tough and slow pace” A1. Panellinios was the most effective Greek team in the open court (due to the ability to press the ball) and the team with the most fast breaks in the league, qualifying to Eurocup Final-4 at his final year in Athens, when he honored with the “Eurocup’s coach of  the year” award. In addition with the most young Greek coaches he is not base the way his team attacks exclusively in pick n roll offense although it uses it. In his offense is distinguished motion and  “cuts”, garnished with many clever collaborations. It was a big success for him, that Greek national team performed well in this new style of offense after many years of greatness, which based on pick n roll.

THE KEY

Leave him alone and give him space to do his job. Vladimir Romanov never understood this although Zouros took both Lithuanian league and LKF cup titles the previous year, in a similar situation. I don’t think that in this point of season you will see a dramatic change in the Efes’s playing style but for sure the team will be more discipline and has better chance to win the TBL title from now on. The biggest issue for them is to acquire stability and then start building on this. Zouros is the right person but he needs trust and patient as  he likes creating a vision to each club he works.  Just give him some time..
